Las Vegas Charity of the Month: Spirit Therapies

Spirit Therapies

Spirit Therapies Therapy on Horseback is an Accredited Premier Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center through PATH. (The Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International) www.pathintl.org

Spirit Therapies is a non-profit organization where children and adults with a wide range of physical and mental disabilities experience the expansion of their worlds through the magic of connecting with horses. The horses are specially trained four-legged therapists, who help riders improve their lives through physical contact, exercise, and interaction with others. Instructors are well-qualified and certified by PATH. Spirit Therapies volunteer staff has been helping children and adults with special needs –including children with Down syndrome, Rhett syndrome, multiple sclerosis, Angelman’s Syndrome, muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injuries, emotional distress, autism, and other disabilities– in the Las Vegas area since 2002.

Spirit Therapies also is excited to have the opportunity to give back to the men and women who have served our country. For active duty military personnel and veterans, Spirit Therapies offers Horses Healing Heroes, Therapy on Horseback. This therapeutic horseback riding program is designed to serve both active duty military personnel and veterans who have been diagnosed with physical and/or mental challenges.

Spirit Therapies positively impacts the lives of the physically and mentally challenged through connecting with trained therapy horses, certified instructors, and compassionate volunteers. As rider’s skills increase, so does their self-esteem and general well-being. Research has proven that exercise and interpersonal interaction produces profound benefits for disabled individuals working to reach their full physical, mental, and social potential. The physical benefits associated with the horses’ body warmth and gait has been shown to increase circulation, relax tight muscles while strengthening weak muscles, increase mobility, develop balance and coordination and improve posture. Horse-assisted group interactive activities contribute to emotional and social re-adjustment by increasing self-esteem, self-sufficiency, and self-confidence, along with a sense of mastery.  Socially, these therapies lead to measurable improvements in communication, memory, and attention span.

Mission:
Spirit Therapies is a non-profit therapeutic riding center that positively impacts the lives of the physically and mentally challenged through connecting with trained therapy horses, certified instructors, and compassionate volunteers. We will educate and bring awareness of this valuable therapy to the public, and one day, be able to offer therapeutic riding free of charge.

Volunteer:
Spirit Therapies needs volunteers in various capacities such as office/computer work, board members, grooming horses, training horses, leading horses during lessons, side-walking horses during lessons, cleaning tack and stalls and a variety of miscellaneous other jobs. Spirit Therapies also hosts a variety of fundraisers throughout the year and would like to invite you to attend or lend a helping hand.

Donate:
Spirit Therapies survives entirely by donations, fundraisers, and therapeutic riding fees. It is the dream of Spirit Therapies to be able to offer therapeutic riding free of charge. Spirit Therapies has several partnership opportunities, and offers the opportunity to sponsor individual veterans and military personnel to cover the cost of their therapy fees. Donations are welcomed at any time, not just monetary, but also supplies and materials in order to maintain the program, the facilities, and to care for the therapeutic horses.
